Commerce: Rivière-Noire Welcomes Monop’, Monoprix's Proximity Format

The first Monop’ opens in Rivière-Noire, combining food, home goods, and digital services in a compact format. It is designed to adapt to the daily lives and expectations of local residents.

The French brand Monoprix announces its return to Mauritius with a format called Monop’. The first store, covering 570 m² and inspired by Art Deco architecture, opened its doors at the end of November in Rivière-Noire. A guided tour was offered to the press on November 27. The compact concept aims to blend convenience and friendliness in a nearby environment.

The Aldis Group, the exclusive partner for developing Monoprix on the island, describes Monop’ as a response to the current expectations of consumers, providing a practical and accessible space where all neighborhood needs can be met. The store offers over 8,500 products, combining local and imported items to cater to daily shopping and last-minute purchases.

"We are pleased to bring Monoprix back to Mauritius and to launch the Monop’ concept for the first time. Our stores are designed to integrate into the daily lives of residents and to showcase local talents: over 35 Mauritian employees have been recruited for the first location," explains Thomas Doger de Spéville, Chairman of the Aldis Group.

Food Offerings

The store retains Monoprix's traditional approach in its food aisles, with special attention given to fresh products. The dairy, charcuterie, and butcher sections are restocked weekly, while the catering area offers a variety of dishes. The wine cellar, organized like a wine shop, caters to both enthusiasts and consumers looking to explore new selections.

The assortment includes Monoprix ranges, Monoprix Gourmet, and Monoprix Bio, complemented by the responsible brand Je suis Vert, dedicated to more sustainable alternatives in hygiene and cleaning categories. The beauty section offers personal care and makeup, with an organic line designed for daily use.

Monoprix Maison, A Space Dedicated to the Art of Living

Beyond food, Monop’ features a home space highlighting decoration, household linen, and practical items for everyday life. Seasonal collections are regularly updated, providing a different shopping experience with each visit.

"The return of Monoprix to Mauritius with Monop’ reflects the concept's ability to adapt to different markets. The goal is to offer a modern proximity model capable of meeting consumer expectations wherever they are," says Vincent Peyronnet, International Director for the Casino Group.

A second store, Monoprix Maison, will open in Cascavelle as early as December. It will be a retail space fully dedicated to home goods, combining decoration and useful everyday items.

Digitalization and Modernization of the Customer Experience

As part of modernization efforts, Monop’ Rivière-Noire utilizes electronic price tags for instant updates and better readability. The checkout area combines traditional mini-checkouts with self-service kiosks to minimize wait times.

Ultimately, a fully digital loyalty card will be rolled out, offering personalized benefits and targeted promotions. This initiative aligns with the Aldis Group's strategy to develop stores close to Mauritians, with formats tailored to each neighborhood.

The return of Monoprix to Mauritius marks the beginning of a series of planned openings on the island, aiming to provide consumers with a diverse, practical choice that integrates into their daily lives.
