Mauritius Telecom Strengthens Telecom Sector Stability: A Strategic and Visionary Agreement Ends 30 Years of Dispute
Mauritius Telecom has announced the conclusion of a major amicable agreement with Emtel, definitively resolving a historic dispute that dates back to 1997. This strategic decision, made with a spirit of responsibility, transparency, and long-term vision, reinforces Mauritius Telecom's position as a key player in the national digital transformation.
As part of this agreement, a total of Rs 800 million will be paid to Emtel, divided equally between Mauritius Telecom—including its subsidiary Cellplus—and the ICTA. This resolution allows for a calm closure to a nearly three-decade-old dispute, while providing a more stable and predictable framework for the entire telecom ecosystem in Mauritius.
This dispute, which extended to the Privy Council in 2024, could have led to significant additional costs for the sector. With this decision, Mauritius Telecom demonstrates exemplary leadership, favoring a pragmatic, responsible approach focused on the future. This judicial clarification now paves the way for a complete focus on its strategic priorities: innovation, continuous improvement of customer experience, and accelerating the country's digital transformation.
"This decision reflects our commitment to act in the best interest of our customers and partners. It was important for us to turn this page to better project ourselves into the future. We can now fully concentrate our efforts on developing a dynamic, innovative, and inclusive digital environment," asserts Veemal Gungadin, CEO of Mauritius Telecom.
Mauritius Telecom expresses gratitude to all stakeholders for the quality of dialogue, professionalism, and the shared willingness to reach a constructive and beneficial conclusion for the entire sector.
