In the villages stretching north of Sri Lanka's capital, flooding has become a seasonal routine. It is an understatement to say that the residents are shocked by the ferocity of the Kelani River's flooding that engulfed them this weekend.

"I never thought the flooding would be this terrible," admits Dinusha Sanjaya, 37, at the emergency shelter set up by authorities in a school in Kolonnawa.
