World AIDS Day: Launch of a Brochure on Frequently Asked Questions Regarding HIV Self-Testing
On the occasion of World AIDS Day 2025, Health and Wellness Minister Anil Bachoo launched a brochure titled "Frequently Asked Questions Regarding HIV Self-Testing" on Monday, December 1, 2025, at the Hennessy Park Hotel in Ébène. This year, the theme chosen by the World Health Organization (WHO) is "Overcoming Disruptions, Transforming the AIDS Response."
In addition to providing clear and precise guidance on HIV self-testing, the brochure addresses common concerns and helps prevent misinformation. The Deputy Minister, Ms. Anishta Babooram, along with other prominent figures, attended the event.
In his speech, the Health Minister emphasized that Mauritius has seen an increase in new HIV infections in recent years, with young adults aged 25 to 44 being the most affected. "Protecting their health means protecting the socio-economic progress of the country, as they are the backbone of the economy," he stated.
Anil Bachoo pointed out that HIV prevention programs have been disrupted due to budget cuts, and essential community services for the most vulnerable populations are losing the support they need. The ministry is committed to adopting innovative approaches to end stigma and discrimination and to protect the rights of the most vulnerable.
He further noted that the ministry is focusing on strengthening the national response to HIV through strategic and people-centered initiatives. "In this regard, the launch of this brochure aims to better support individuals who choose to get tested in a private and confidential setting," said the minister.
Anil Bachoo also announced that the national daycare for immunocompromised individuals will be relocated to more suitable modern facilities within A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port-Louis. This move reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that people living with HIV receive appropriate care in a safe and supportive environment.
