Live Suicide: Strengthening Cybersecurity

A live suicide incident involving a 21-year-old mother in her home on Caprice Road, Petit-Verger was discussed during the parliamentary session on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

"Is the minister planning to provide a 24/7 support service following yesterday's live suicide?" asked MP Arvin Babajee.

Minister of Information Technology, Avinash Ramtohul, stated that the incident "demonstrates that local organizations are no longer adequate." The submitted statistics speak for themselves: cyberbullying and digital violence have risen for the third consecutive year, disproportionately affecting women and minors.

The government is considering the creation of an independent online safety regulator, modeled after Australia's eSafety Commissioner or Britain's Ofcom. Consultations with the Attorney General’s Office are ongoing.

Development of a 24/7 support service

The minister noted that the Information Communication and Telecommunications Authority, the Data Protection Office, the Cybercrime Unit, the Child Development Unit, and the Computer Emergency Response Team "are no longer sufficient."

He announced the development of a 24/7 support service for individuals in distress, in partnership with the Maharashtra government and the Ministry of Gender Affairs.
