Road Safety: 806 Serious Accidents Linked to Alcohol, Drugs, and Lack of License

Content: On Tuesday, the Prime Minister responded in Parliament to a question from MP Farhad Aumeer about road accidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or those without a driver's license. He provided statistics covering the period from January 1, 2022, to November 28, 2025.

In total, 806 such accidents were reported to the police during this period, including 287 fatal accidents. Among these, there were 25 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol, eight cases of driving after using drugs, and eight cases of driving without a license. Regarding rented vehicles, 110 legally rented and four illegally rented vehicles were involved in road accidents during this time.

Of these 110 vehicles, two were involved in fatal accidents while the drivers were under the influence of alcohol, and one after the driver had consumed drugs. Navin Ramgoolam stated, "These figures remind us that reckless and illegal driving costs lives. The government is determined to reverse this trend through stricter enforcement of the law, enhanced legislation, and smarter technologies."
