Bet 365 Case: Mohamad Husein Abdool Rahim Found Guilty of Fraud

On December 2, 2025, the Intermediate Court ruled in the Bet 365 case, finding Mohamad Husein Abdool Rahim guilty of defrauding Sylvio Joseph Sundanum of Rs 935,000 in 2017. He has since repaid Rs 300,000 of that amount. However, he was acquitted of a separate charge involving Rs 500,000 against his ex-girlfriend, Lynn Joëlle Ah Fat, from October 2016.

Mohamad Husein Abdool Rahim, 40, residing in Port-Louis, pleaded not guilty to both fraud charges. He had convinced Sylvio Joseph Sundanum, a General Manager whom he befriended at a gym, that he had won approximately 2 million euros on "Bet 365 UK Online Sports Betting." To secure his winnings, he claimed he needed to deposit 2,800 euros.

To support his claims, the accused presented documents, and they even traveled abroad at Sundanum's expense to open an account and manage his winnings. However, this endeavor failed, and Sundanum eventually realized he had been scammed. Out of the Rs 935,000 he defrauded from Sundanum, the accused repaid Rs 300,000.

Furthermore, the accused's ex-girlfriend also testified, stating that he had informed her he would go to prison for owing money to a police officer. He showed her documents purportedly from Bet 365 to explain how he planned to repay the money, which led her to give him Rs 500,000. Rahim denied these allegations under oath.

Verdict

Magistrate Sophie Chui-Gunness considered Sundanum's testimony, describing him as a reliable witness who testified straightforwardly. "I am satisfied beyond reasonable doubt with the version of Mr. Sundanum that the accused lied to him about the winnings he had in a Bet 365 account in the United Kingdom, and that he further showed him documents to support his lies and make them appear true to Mr. Sundanum," the magistrate wrote. Consequently, a guilty verdict was issued against Mohamad Husein Abdool Rahim.

Regarding the ex-girlfriend's case, the magistrate concluded that the prosecution failed to establish the charge against the accused, citing inconsistencies in her testimony. Thus, Mohamad Husein Abdool Rahim was acquitted in this matter, and the charge against him was dismissed.
