Thuli Madonsela, an Icon of the South African Anti-Corruption Struggle, in Mauritius

On the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day celebrated on December 9, 2025, the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) will host a distinguished guest, Thuli Madonsela, for a series of workshops. A leading figure in the fight against corruption in South Africa, Thuli Madonsela is a lawyer, law professor, and human rights activist who played a pivotal role in drafting the final version of the South African Constitution, promulgated in 1996 by President Nelson Mandela. She has also contributed to the development of several key laws, including the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act and the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, as well as other reforms related to customary law and equality.

Her appointment as the Public Protector of the Republic by Jacob Zuma enabled her to investigate dysfunction and abuses of power within the public administration. With a team of 150 investigators, she accused National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele of failing to adhere to tender procedures and accepting inflated prices. In 2012, she also investigated allegations of bribery involving Julius Malema, the controversial president of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL), regarding contracts awarded to On-Point Engineering.

Today, Thuli Madonsela is the director of the Centre for Social Justice at Stellenbosch University, where she holds the Law Trust Chair in Social Justice. Teaching constitutional law, social justice, and ethical leadership, she has received several academic honors, including eight honorary doctorates, while practicing as an attorney at the High Court of South Africa.

Globally recognized for her integrity and courage, Thuli was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2014. She has also received numerous awards, including the International Integrity Award from Transparency International (2014) and the Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany (2018). In 2021, the French state awarded her the highest French honor, the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor.

During her visit to Mauritius, Ms. Madonsela will lead a workshop alongside the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Rashid Ahmine, on the theme "Fighting Corruption and Other Financial Crimes, Advancing Social Justice" on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, starting at 9:30 AM at the FCC headquarters in Réduit, followed by a press conference with local media. The next day, a forum titled "Shaping the Next Chapter in Anti-Corruption Efforts: Engaging the Youth in the Fight Against Corruption and Other Financial Crimes" will focus on the youth.
