Judicial Calendar 2026: The Supreme Court Moves

If Rodrigues has a district court led by Magistrate Devinash Oozageer, it is the Supreme Court of Mauritius that regularly travels to Port-Mathurin to handle cases that exceed local jurisdiction. The schedule for 2026 has already been established for Rodrigues.

Three times a year, in accordance with Rule 56 of the Supreme Court Rules 2000, a judge holds hearings specifically dedicated to cases under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court: divorces, appeals, judicial reviews, or significant civil disputes, particularly those exceeding Rs 1 million, following amendments to the District Court Act.

In 2026, Supreme Court sessions in Rodrigues will take place from April 1 to 3, from August 5 to 7, and from December 2 to 4. During each of these periods, a judge is dispatched to the island to hear cases that require a decision from the highest judicial authority in the country.

While the district court continues to handle routine matters, the occasional presence of the Supreme Court allows the residents of Rodrigues to assert their rights without having to travel to Mauritius for more complex cases or incurring travel expenses. This initiative aims to ensure equal access to justice.
