In France: Selven Goburdhan Stabbed by His Neighbor
In France, Selven Goburdhan, a 43-year-old Mauritian living in Saint-Flour for thirteen years, was fatally stabbed during a dispute. His 59-year-old neighbor inflicted sixteen stab wounds on him on the evening of Saturday, November 29. The neighbor alerted the police and fled the scene, but was soon arrested by the gendarmerie in downtown Saint-Flour. The tragedy occurred in Goburdhan's apartment at 43 rue Marchande in this southeastern neighborhood of France. When police arrived, Selven was found lifeless in his bed. The autopsy revealed that he had received at least thirteen stab wounds.
In Bain-des-Dames, Cassis, there is shock and disbelief. Selven was a mason with dreams of building a better future for himself in France after arriving thirteen years ago. His residency was legalized in 2025, and he cherished the hope of bringing his mother, Indranee, for a visit. She had been waiting for him to return home. A framed photo of Selven sits on a table, and the Goburdhans linger on it with sorrowful gazes.
Indranee shares that a relative was the one to break the tragic news to her over the phone: "A nephew told me Selven has died." She laments that no authorities have approached her regarding the incident. According to her, the tragedy unfolded when Selven visited a neighbor for a celebration.
Vacation
This mother of three reveals that Selven was supposed to return to Mauritius for a vacation on Friday, December 5. "Today my son was supposed to come to Mauritius to celebrate my birthday, but now we are waiting for his body," Indranee confides.
Selven would visit Mauritius every year for vacations, always in good spirits and full of life. "Selven was well-prepared for this vacation; he said he would raise the Kavadi (a ceremonial offering)." Indranee weeps as she remembers, "My son used to call me often." She adds that he never gave the impression that anyone could want to harm him.
According to the Goburdhans, Selven was loved by everyone, even in France. He often made video calls to share his experiences with friends, colleagues, and family.
Selven came from a family of three children and grew up in Bain-des-Dames. Passionate about construction, he worked as a mason before moving to France in 2012. Despite living in irregular situations, Selven dreamed of building a better future for himself and his family. By early 2025, he had obtained all necessary documentation, legalizing his status in France. Even in France, Selven shared his professional skills in construction.
Repatriation
In the Goburdhan household, following this sudden loss, family members face an unexpected and challenging situation. A funeral home in Mauritius is now demanding Rs 250,000 for repatriation costs. The Goburdhans are unsure how to gather this amount. Recently, a French company indicated that the cost of shipping the body back to Mauritius would be around Rs 500,000. Indranee wishes for Selven to return home one last time.
