Premier League: Liverpool Held to a Draw by Leeds and Stunned by Salah's Comments
Liverpool, the reigning English champions, were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw by Leeds on Saturday, with Mohamed Salah making headlines after expressing doubts about his future with the club.
Salah's frustration was evident as he was benched for the third consecutive match, describing the situation as "unacceptable and unfair". He stated, “I feel like the club has thrown me to the wolves,” emphasizing that he has done so much for the team and should not have to fight for his position daily, as he believes he has earned it.
The Egyptian winger played a pivotal role in Liverpool's title win last season and was named the best player for the 2024-25 season. However, he has lost his automatic starting spot this season due to underwhelming performances, despite being the club's third all-time top scorer with 250 goals in 420 matches.
Salah lamented, “I’ve said before that I had a good relationship with the coach, but suddenly, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. I don’t know why, but it feels like someone at the club doesn’t want me here.”
At 33 years old, Salah hinted that the upcoming match against Brighton could be his last with Liverpool, stating, “I’ll be at Anfield to say goodbye to the fans before going to the Africa Cup of Nations because I don’t know what will happen when I’m there.”
Earlier in the week, coach Arne Slot praised Salah’s professionalism, acknowledging his dissatisfaction with not starting but insisted it was a normal reaction for a player of his caliber.
Salah's public outburst complicates matters for the Dutch manager, who is struggling to turn the team's fortunes around. Liverpool, currently eighth in the Premier League, has only managed two victories out of their last ten league matches.
The match against Leeds slipped away from Liverpool after they initially took a solid lead with a brace from French striker Hugo Ekitiké just after halftime. However, Leeds fought back, equalizing late in the game with a corner kick goal from Ao Tanaka in the sixth minute of added time.
Liverpool’s previous match ended in a draw against Sunderland (1-1), marking the second consecutive draw for the team.
