Mahébourg: Woman Arrested for Fraud Exceeding Rs 100,000

A 41-year-old woman was arrested last Friday in Mahébourg in connection with an alleged fraud and embezzlement case. According to the police, this Beau-Vallon resident is accused of extracting over Rs 100,000 in cash and jewelry from a Ville-Noire resident by convincing her that she could help resolve a personal issue. During her interrogation, the suspect admitted to the charges. She has been placed in custody pending her appearance in court this Monday.

The events date back to November 13. After leaving a police station, the victim was approached by the suspect, who assured her that she could help with her difficulties. The following day, the same woman visited her home and demanded a sum of money for an alleged urgent service. Under pressure, the victim complied.

A few hours later, the suspect returned, this time requesting jewelry—a ring, earrings, a sovereign, and a chain—claiming she would clean them. However, she never returned them. Instead, she reportedly made numerous calls, requests, and even threats. In total, the victim claims to have lost over Rs 100,000.
