Personal Data Leaked: The Data Protection Office Sounds the Alarm

The Data Protection Office (DPO) has issued a warning following the circulation of a post on social media containing the passport information of two students involved in a jet-ski incident in Dubai.

In a statement, the agency reminds that the unauthorized disclosure of personal data poses a serious risk to the individuals concerned, particularly regarding privacy violations and identity theft.

The DPO emphasizes that the dissemination of such information is governed by the Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Act, as well as by the Data Protection Act.

Any publication of personal data requires the prior consent of the individual, in accordance with Article 28 of the law.

Offenders face a fine of up to Rs 200,000 and a prison sentence of up to five years.

The Data Protection Office urges the public to act responsibly and asks those who have shared this content to remove it immediately.

It is worth noting that a 17-year-old Mauritian, Saniah Hobass, lost her life in a jet-ski accident in Dubai. She had been on vacation in the emirate since December 3rd with her cousin and was at sea in Jumeirah when a serious accident occurred.
