Conference in India: Renganaden Padayachy Denies Any Accusation of Fleeing the Country
At a conference in India, former Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy firmly denied any allegations of fleeing the country. He expressed his intention to return home to confront all accusations against him. Padayachy plans to travel to India via Dubai for a conference scheduled from December 12 to 18, 2025. The Port Louis court will deliver its verdict on December 11, 2025.
In his application, the former minister stated that he has been invited as the "guest of honour" at the W50 Summit organized by the World Leaders Consortium, taking place on December 15 and 16, 2025, in New Delhi, India. Under oath, he mentioned that this trip would allow him to expand his company's international network and meet global leaders.
Responding to questions from his lawyer, Me Raouf Gulbul, Padayachy indicated his willingness to surrender his French passport and identity card, along with those of his wife, to the police and court. He acknowledged that he is not obligated to attend the conference but emphasized that participating is essential for him to earn a living.
This debate follows the police's objection to the former minister's request, claiming he might escape via Dubai using his French passport. Police Assistant Superintendent Balmick Dussoye noted that the authenticity of the documents submitted by Padayachy in support of his request has not yet been verified.
Renganaden Padayachy, 54, has been arrested twice. The first arrest was part of an investigation by the Anti-Money Laundering Unit regarding an alleged misappropriation of Rs 45 million affecting the Mauritius Investment Corporation in favor of Menlo Park Ltd, supposedly committed in August 2024. He was later arrested in connection with a Financial Crimes Commission inquiry into a suspected misappropriation of Rs 300 million, impacting the MIC and benefiting Apavou Hotels Ltd, which allegedly occurred in May 2024.
