The delegation from the Chinese Communist Party engaged with Mauritian officials to discuss bilateral cooperation, economic development, and governance, thereby strengthening the Sino-Mauritian partnership.
This week, the delegation, led by Li Mingxiang, Vice Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, was on an official visit to Mauritius. As part of this visit, the Chinese embassy hosted a seminar on December 9, providing Mauritian representatives with the opportunity to engage directly with the delegation. Discussions focused on the state of bilateral relations, sharing experiences in national governance, and several strategic topics important to both nations.
Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Patrick Assirvaden, also participated in the seminar. This official visit was described as a "strong symbol" of Sino-Mauritian friendship, reflecting an increasingly solid partnership.
In his speech, Patrick Assirvaden emphasized the strength of a friendship that "has not only endured but has intensified over the years." He noted that the Sino-Mauritian relationship is grounded in multiple connections—economic, cultural, and human—that have long shaped exchanges between the two countries. He also acknowledged China's continuous support, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. "At the height of the health crisis, China provided assistance by supplying medical equipment and facilitating the return of citizens from both countries," he remarked, describing this cooperation as a "true spirit of fraternity."
Patrick Assirvaden highlighted that the Chinese delegation also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ritish Ramful. Discussions revolved around exchange prospects and strategic themes such as governance, public policy, and sustainable development.
Both parties agreed to further explore the trade imbalance between Mauritius and China, while also investigating joint initiatives that could yield mutual benefits.
Community Dynamics
Patrick Assirvaden pointed out that the Mauritius-China Free Trade Agreement paves the way for expanded collaboration between the private sectors of both countries. According to him, the rapid growth of the bilateral partnership reflects a political will to go even further. He also highlighted the essential role of the Chinese community in Mauritius and the vibrancy of cultural exchanges. Chinese New Year, a national holiday, and the annual Chinatown festivities serve as a "living bridge between peoples," he noted.
Referencing China's national vision, Patrick Assirvaden praised the "era of progress and prosperity" initiated by President Xi Jinping, expressing confidence in the continued development of China. He concluded by emphasizing the untapped potential of the Sino-Mauritian partnership: "The future of our relations will depend on our ability to seize opportunities together, to demonstrate pragmatism, and to be creative. As close friends, we share a common interest in each other's success."
Optimistic about the coming decades, he expressed hope that the relationship between Mauritius and China "will continue to prosper and thrive for many years to come."
During the seminar, the 20th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party made several recommendations for the development of the 15th Five-Year Plan for national economic and social development (2026–2030). These guidelines were based on a thorough analysis of international dynamics and China's internal situation.
In the same spirit, the Chinese delegation also presented new opportunities for cooperation between China and Mauritius, as well as between China and Africa. Li Mingxiang underscored Beijing's desire to "enhance cooperation in various fields to benefit both our countries." He specifically mentioned green industries, sustainable development, long-term economic resilience, and other sectors deemed promising for a mutually beneficial partnership.
