Suicide Attempt at Beau-Bassin Prison: 25-Year-Old Man Saved Just in Time by Fellow Inmates

A tragedy was narrowly avoided on Tuesday, December 9, at the central prison of Beau-Bassin. A 25-year-old inmate, who had been in pre-trial detention since October 7, 2025, for attempted murder, was discovered attempting to hang himself in the toilets of Block F. Thanks to the swift intervention of a guard and several fellow inmates, he was rescued.

At around 1:45 PM, inmates alerted a guard on duty, reporting that a fellow inmate was in danger in the first-floor toilets. Upon arrival, the guard found the young man suspended, with a torn sheet tied around his neck to a security grille. With the help of several prisoners, he cut the fabric and brought the inmate back to the ground.

The young man was still breathing, albeit weakly. The guards immediately activated the emergency protocol. He was first taken care of by the prison's internal medical unit and then transferred to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle for further evaluation.

Prison authorities have not officially commented on the motivations behind the act. According to our sources, the inmate had been experiencing significant distress for several weeks.

An internal investigation has been launched to understand how the inmate was able to obtain a sufficiently strong sheet, why his situation was not detected earlier, and whether more regular psychological monitoring could have prevented this incident.
