India: A 21-Meter Statue in Honor of Messi
"A tribute worthy of his stature": In Kolkata, Indian fans have erected a 21-meter statue honoring Lionel Messi, who begins a three-day tour in the country on Saturday.
However, the "Pulga" (the flea) will not be able to attend the statue's inauguration in person due to security reasons.
The monumental work, which depicts the Argentine star holding the World Cup trophy, overlooks the chaotic traffic of the eastern metropolis, which is not known as a football hub.
"This is the largest statue I have ever created," said Monti Paul, who led the design of the iron sculpture. "It is a matter of pride."
In India, whose national team ranks near the bottom of the FIFA standings (142nd, behind Latvia and Liberia), the enthusiasm for the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner rivals that of local cricket stars.
Messi kicks off his three-day tour in Kolkata, which will also take him to Hyderabad, Mumbai, and the capital New Delhi. He is expected to meet Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
