Kass Poz Lir: Opening of a Reading Space at Caudan Waterfront

On December 4th, Caudan Waterfront inaugurated a new cultural concept: Kass Poz Lir, an open-air mobile library located at Barkly Wharf. Designed as a space for relaxation and discovery, this initiative aims to encourage the public to reconnect with books in an accessible, vibrant, and relaxed environment.

At the center of the installation, a Vespa transformed into a mini-library and painted by Mauritian artist Sapna immediately draws attention. Colorful and mobile, it symbolizes the principle of reading on the move, accessible to everyone, deliberately stepping out of traditional venues like libraries and classrooms to become visible in the heart of the city.

Kass Poz Lir is based on a simple idea: allowing visitors to take a break, browse a book, and immerse themselves in a story for a few minutes. Caudan aims to promote reading as a daily practice. The project also emphasizes sustainability by giving a second life to reused books.

This outdoor format responds to a reality: despite existing educational infrastructures, reading is sometimes seen as an obligation rather than a source of pleasure. By placing books in a recreational space, the initiative aims to change this perception, especially among the younger generation, who are often captivated by screens.

A Launch Highlighted by Creativity

The inauguration event brought guests together for cocktails and live music. After official speeches, the evening continued with reading sessions led by authors Dharyan Minien and Ouday Chuttoo. This participatory dimension places writing in a lively dynamic: listening, reading, sharing, exchanging.

By integrating writers into the launch, Kass Poz Lir reminds us that reading is not just an individual act but also a collective experience that connects generations and sensitivities. The initiative comes at a time when reading habits are evolving. While young people have multiple access points to digital content, studies show that reading for pleasure remains one of the most effective ways to develop expression, imagination, and understanding of the world. Books remain a fundamental support for intellectual and emotional development from childhood.

Kass Poz Lir thus encourages a return to reading without constraints: the freedom to choose, settle in, read just a few pages, or come back later. Caudan Waterfront sees this as a means to strengthen the bond between Mauritians and both local and international literature, while encouraging families to incorporate reading into their daily lives.
