India: Lionel Messi's Arrival Causes Chaos in Kolkata
India: Lionel Messi's arrival has caused chaos in Kolkata. Fans flocked to see their idol, Lionel Messi, during a rare promotional tour in India. On Saturday, after the Argentine superstar was whisked away from the Salt Lake Stadium, chaos ensued as admirers vandalized the venue.
During his visit until Monday, the 38-year-old player, who is celebrated in India despite the sport's limited popularity, was met by enthusiastic fans chanting his name upon his arrival in West Bengal on Saturday morning.
A few hours later, thousands of fans wearing Messi jerseys gathered at the Salt Lake Stadium but were frustrated by security measures that made it nearly impossible to catch a glimpse of him.
The World Champion waved to the crowd before leaving the stadium immediately, despite plans for him to play for a few minutes.
Frustration erupted among fans, many of whom paid over $100—equivalent to a month's salary for some. Seats were ripped out and thrown onto the field alongside water bottles before the area was stormed.
"Seeing Messi was a dream. But I didn't get the chance due to the disorganization in the stadium," lamented 37-year-old businessman Nabin Chatterjee, speaking to AFP.
"I came with my son to see Messi, not politicians," fumed Ajay Shah, as reported by Indian news agency PTI, pointing out that while he could not see the star, police and military personnel tasked with his security were taking selfies with him.
He blamed the chaos on the event's organization.
Later, a police official from the state, Javed Shamim, announced that "the head of the organization" had been arrested, without providing further details. He added that authorities would investigate how organizers could refund tickets for the disastrous event.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her shock at the poor organization.
"I sincerely apologize to Lionel Messi, all sports lovers, and his fans for the unfortunate incident," she wrote on her X account, adding that she had launched an inquiry into the events.
Before his arrival at the Salt Lake Stadium, a massive 21-meter statue of Messi holding the World Cup was unveiled in the city.
The Argentine is set to continue his tour in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi.
