Education: Curepipe College to Open its Doors to Girls Starting in 2026
Education: Curepipe College is set to welcome girls in Grade 7 starting January 2026, marking a historic first since its establishment in 1962. Enrollment has already begun following the announcement of the 2025 Primary School Achievement Certificate results.
To facilitate this transition, dedicated bathrooms and a rest area have been established, with additional infrastructure improvements on the way. Neetesh Raj Sewpal, the college's manager and principal, assures that everything is ready to accommodate the new female students and provide them with the same opportunities as their male counterparts, including in extracurricular activities. "We had our boys, now we will have our girls," he emphasizes.
Both teachers and students share in the excitement. Safety is a priority: all classrooms and the courtyard are equipped with cameras. Fabian Raszy, a former Head Boy, recalls his emotional experiences: "I received a lot of support from the teachers, who were always present and dedicated." He reassures parents that the college is "top-notch" and reminds students that the teaching staff is there to support them.
The college boasts numerous advantages: a modern fitness studio, a well-equipped computer lab, a music room with instruments, specialized classrooms for design, cooking, and science labs, covered walkways, and a brand-new synthetic football field.
January 2026 will also see the introduction of Kreol Morisien in Grade 10, providing more subject choices and better chances of academic success. Regular follow-ups with parents remain central to the educational approach, especially regarding students' behavior and well-being.
Since 2025, mobile phones have been banned during school hours; they are collected in the morning, securely stored in lockers, and returned at the end of the day. A bus service is provided to facilitate transportation.
With the arrival of girls, Curepipe College is undergoing a major transformation. With modern infrastructure, innovative pedagogy, and attentive supervision, the institution is positioning itself as a key player in secondary education in Mauritius.
