Andy Selmour's Partner: "We Were Supposed to Marry Upon His Release from Prison"

Andy Selmour's partner, Eliza Drapcand, expressed her devastation at his passing, stating, "It's not fair... I believe those who caused this should pay. He suffered a lot..." At his funeral yesterday, 22-year-old Eliza stood somewhat apart, stoic, with a vacant stare. The pain was etched on her face. With Andy's death, their life, plans, and promises of love collapsed like a sandcastle.

They had intended to marry in 2027, upon his release from prison. "He said when he got out, we would build our little home, start our family, and he told me we would go to England to live there... All the time he said to me, 'it's just you and me against the world,'" she confided, devastated.

The last time she saw him alive was on Tuesday, December 9, at the high-security prison in Melrose. That day, something felt off. Andy wasn't himself. "He told me he had many problems, he said, 'don't worry, I'll handle it,' and that he was feeling unwell. I told him, 'take off your overalls.' He went to wash his face and came back. At that moment, his body was there, but his mind seemed absent. He told me he felt like he was getting sick," Eliza recalls.

Before she left, Andy said something that still echoes in her mind: "He told me, 'you're going to be surprised, we will get married.'" He hung up the phone, turned away, and left without looking at her. "He didn't give me a single glance. That really exhausted me."

That night, around 11 PM, Eliza was at home in Pointe-aux-Sables, getting ready for bed when the phone rang. "The prison called me, asking about Andy Selmour. I said he was my partner. They told me, 'sorry, we're calling to inform you that he has passed away.'" Shocked, she asked how he died. "They told me he was injured. I started to cry, but they said they didn’t know how he was injured."

The next day was horrific. Eliza had to identify the body. Nothing prepared her for what she was about to see. Andy Selmour, whom she had seen just hours earlier, was unrecognizable. "When I went to see him, he was lifeless with his eyes open... It was not easy at all, full of wounds everywhere, where he had been hit, his arms, his elbow was swollen, his head was bleeding, his ears, his nose, his mouth was covered in blood," she recounted between sobs.

At that moment, Eliza struggled to recognize the man who promised her a better future. They had been together for five years. "At first, I didn’t like him at all, but later he showed me what was truly in his heart."

Despite his legal troubles, Eliza, with patience and strength, said she had been a great support for him. "His life was extremely difficult, but I helped him change, it took a lot of time. He changed, he did what he had to do, he made an effort." In fact, Andy always told her he wanted to change for her. "He always said he would change for me because I did everything necessary for him."

Today, Eliza Drapcand is a devastated young woman. All she wants is justice for the one she loved. "I just need justice, nothing more." She is convinced: "It was his friends who did this, those he trusted most, four people beat him."

To this day, Eliza says she is unaware of the reasons behind this tragedy. She doesn’t understand. But one thing is certain: that Tuesday afternoon when Andy turned his back without looking at her, when his mind seemed absent, when he told her he felt weak, he knew something was going to happen.

And Eliza has to live with that memory. The memory of a last glance that never happened. The memory of a marriage promise that will never be fulfilled. The memory of a man who kept telling her, "It's just you and me against the world."
