Kevin Naygom: From Garage Hairdresser to Salon Owner

Kevin Naygom has transformed his passion into a reality, moving from a small family garage to owning his salon, Hair Attitude.

At just 35 years old, Kevin skillfully adjusts his client's hairstyle with scissors in hand. Every movement is deliberate and precise. In his cozy salon located in Curepipe, the scents of shampoo and styling products blend with the laughter of his loyal customers. Here, each haircut is not just a technical act; it's a moment to listen, understand, and change the perspective of those who sit in his chair.

The salon he has built brick by brick tells his story: that of a young man from a modest family who became a recognized hairstylist through hard work, patience, and passion.

From a young age, Kevin, the youngest of three siblings, knew his future would revolve around scissors, brushes, and hair strands. While other children dreamed of being pilots or footballers, he spent his days observing the hairstyles of players, captivated by their precision and style. "It was like a form of art for me," he shares, a subtle smile on his face but a determined gaze.

After completing secondary school, he undertook an internship in hairdressing at Shariff in Curepipe, where he learned the fundamentals of the trade: observing, listening, wielding scissors, and understanding client expectations.

But passion alone was not enough. Lacking income, his parents provided him with a few tools to hone his skills. Gradually, he built a collection of equipment that he kept carefully in the family garage: a mirror here, a chair there, a few hair care products. His goal was clear: to open his own salon, though he was unsure where or how.

Understanding that hairdressing requires solid training, Kevin continued his professional education and joined Tesh Coiffure in Belle-Rose. There, he learned about color theory, modern cuts, and most importantly, the significance of human connection: "To style someone’s hair is also to listen. A haircut can change how a person views themselves. It’s more than just a job; it’s a bond of trust."

With enough equipment gathered, Kevin transformed the family garage into a makeshift salon. No grand windows, just a mirror, two chairs, and a lamp. But in this small space, he breathed life into his dream. The first clients were neighbors, followed by friends and family.

Word of mouth quickly spread: clients appreciated his precision, kindness, and punctuality. "I wanted every client to feel special, regardless of their means," he says.

After several years of hard work between Tesh Coiffure and his family garage, he reached a new milestone: the official opening of his salon nine years ago. "It was a small space, nothing luxurious, but it was mine," he recalls.

Today, Hair Attitude is a trusted place where men, women, and children find their style. The salon has become a warm space, a place for hairstyling, relaxation, conversation, and leaving with a smile. Kevin continues to educate himself, participates in competitions, and shares his knowledge with young apprentices. "I want young people to understand that this profession is noble. Being a hairstylist is not just about cutting hair; it’s about restoring confidence and valuing people," he explains.

For Kevin, success is not measured by material possessions or money; it's built on passion, perseverance, and courage. "It’s not the material or money that defines success. It’s the passion, perseverance, and courage to never give up."

His family, especially his parents and wife, remains his greatest pride. "Their patience and support have meant everything to me. Without God's grace, I could never have achieved this," he humbly states.

At 35, Kevin is already looking to the future. He hopes to expand his salon, train more young people, and perhaps one day launch his own hair product line: "I want to prove that in Mauritius, we can create, innovate, and succeed without going abroad."

From his family garage to the helm of Hair Attitude, Kevin Naygom embodies success step by step. His story serves as a reminder that passion is the most beautiful driving force. As he likes to tell his apprentices: "Scissors in hand mean nothing without passion in the heart."
