Educational Reform: Four Catholic Colleges Considered for National Status
Four Catholic institutions might be added to the list of 21 National Colleges announced by the Ministry of Education. The SeDEC expresses openness to the reform while upholding its educational principles.
The four Catholic institutions under consideration are Collège du Saint-Joseph, Loreto College Port-Louis (LCPL), Loreto College Quatre-Bornes (LCQB), and Collège du Saint-Esprit. These colleges could soon be included in the list of 21 new national colleges proposed by the Ministry of Education.
As part of the reform suggested by Minister of Education, Dr. Mahend Gungapersad, a selection of 21 institutions has been established to revive the concept of national colleges, which will replace the Academies. It is important to note that these institutions will operate in a single-gender mode.
While regional colleges will accommodate students following the National Certificate of Education (NCE) assessments, the SeDEC aims to admit students as early as Grade 7. In an official communication, the institution stated that discussions are ongoing with the ministry regarding this reform. A working meeting took place on Tuesday, December 9, bringing together representatives from both parties.
During this meeting, SeDEC representatives were informed about the establishment of National Colleges and other aspects of the reform that directly impact school life.
In its statement, SeDEC welcomes any initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of education provided to children and youth in Mauritius. The institution also reaffirms its commitment to the core values of Catholic education: respect for human dignity, equal opportunities, inclusion, and the holistic development of each student.
