Creation of a £40 Million Trust Fund for Chagossians: London Welcomes the Mauritian Initiative
The British government has praised the commitments made by the Mauritian government to introduce legislation governing the establishment of a £40 million trust fund for the Chagossians. This fund will be managed by Chagossians, for Chagossians, as announced by British Minister Stephen Doughty in an official statement released on Monday on the British Assembly's website.
According to the outlined terms, the management and utilization of the financial resources will be entrusted to a board of directors comprising 12 members, seven of whom will be from the Chagossian community, ensuring a Chagossian majority within the decision-making body. The presidency of the fund will also be held by a Chagossian, who will be appointed by the Chagossian members of the board.
