What We Know About the Murders of Filmmaker Rob Reiner and His Wife

Filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer were killed at their Los Angeles home by their son, according to police reports.

Here’s what we know about the couple’s tragic deaths:

Call to Police
The police were called to the couple's luxurious home around 3:40 PM on Sunday (11:40 PM GMT), located in the affluent Brentwood neighborhood of West Los Angeles. The call was made from the couple’s residence, as reported by American media.

Upon arrival, police officers discovered and identified the bodies of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer, who appeared to have been stabbed and had their throats slit, according to various news outlets.

According to TMZ, the couple's daughter informed authorities that a family member had killed them.

Arrest
One of the director's sons, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, was arrested around 9:15 PM local time for the murder of his parents. He was questioned during the night from Sunday to Monday, and the police later announced in a statement that he was "responsible" for the deaths of the American filmmaker and his wife.

Drug Issues
Nick Reiner struggled with drug addiction. As a teenager, he underwent multiple rehabilitation stays and at times lived as a homeless person.

In 2015, he collaborated with his father Rob on a film titled "Being Charlie," inspired by his life. The film follows an 18-year-old, Charlie, who is sent to rehab to overcome his drug addiction.

Rob Reiner, who died at the age of 78, had previously spoken to the press about the challenges of raising a child with substance abuse issues.

"It was very, very complicated going through this ordeal the first time, with difficult and painful ups and downs," he stated, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Making this film brought everything back to the surface."
