The investigation into the death of Andy Selmour, 33, at the Melrose high-security prison on Tuesday, December 9, has entered a crucial phase. Investigators are now focusing on the role of five fellow inmates who transported the injured man after the assault, as well as the responsibilities of the guards and prison hierarchy on duty that day.

Identified through surveillance footage, these five inmates are seen as key witnesses to the events leading up to Andy Selmour's transfer to the Medical Unit. They are to be questioned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Flacq to determine exactly what transpired between the initial assault and the medical care provided to the inmate.

It has been established that Andy Selmour was assaulted multiple times that day. After the first assault, the five inmates allegedly moved him to another location in the yard, where he was placed on the ground. When his condition worsened and he complained of pain, Andy Selmour was taken to the Medical Unit, where he was placed in a cell.

The police are also investigating the behavior of the prison staff. Starting Tuesday, December 16, the CID of the Eastern Division, under the supervision of Superintendent Vikash Babajee, will be interviewing several prison officials, including the assistant superintendent on duty in the afternoon of December 9. Investigators seek explanations regarding the sequence of events, the role of each guard, and the management of the surveillance footage from Kestrel Yard, which is already in their possession.

The police are particularly interested in the conditions surrounding Andy Selmour's transfer to the Medical Unit and the delay before any medical intervention. Footage indicates that the inmate was placed in a cell without immediate medical care, awaiting the arrival of healthcare staff.

Just before 7 PM, a nurse who had just started their shift discovered the deceased, according to surveillance footage. Resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful, and the emergency medical service (Samu) confirmed the death.

For reference, Andy Selmour was assaulted inside Melrose prison before being taken to the Medical Unit, where he died that same evening. An autopsy conducted on Friday, December 12, by the head of the Police Medical Office, Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, concluded that he had suffered a skull fracture and multiple injuries, indicating that he had attempted to protect himself during the attack. He was reportedly struck with a metal rod from a prison bed and wooden rods from a Carrom board. The police are leaning towards the theory of a premeditated assault.

Meanwhile, the four presumed assailants have been transferred to the New Wing prisons in Beau-Bassin and La Bastille in Phoenix, where they are held under strict "Under Punishment" regulations, with several privileges revoked.
