Vision 2050: The Ministry of Economic Planning Launches National Consultations to Redefine Tomorrow's Mauritius

Mauritius is poised to enter a new decisive phase in its development. The government, through the Ministry of Economic Planning, will officially launch the National Consultations for Vision 2050 on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at the Octave Wiehe Auditorium in Réduit, led by Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam. These consultations represent a comprehensive participatory exercise aimed at defining the country's trajectory for the next twenty-five years.

For over 50 years, Mauritius has continually reinvented itself. From an emerging economy based solely on sugar cane monoculture in 1968, when many at the time deemed the island destined to fail, the country has transformed into a model of diversification, innovation, and resilience. Each significant advancement—from the rise of Export Processing Zones to the successes in tourism, finance, and ICT—has stemmed from bold choices, strong partnerships between the state and the private sector, and a unique ability to anticipate global transformations.

Today, as new challenges arise—such as an aging population, brain drain, labor shortages, climate change, declining productivity, and new geopolitical dynamics—one conviction stands out: to continue progressing, Mauritius must redefine its growth model. This is precisely why the Ministry of Economic Planning has been reinstated: to provide the country with a long-term vision, coordinate the national strategy, and guide the major transitions of tomorrow.

Vision 2050 will be built on three inseparable pillars: Prosperity, Sustainability, and Inclusion. "The government is particularly committed to the participatory and inclusive aspect of these consultations. Over the next four months, these discussions will give a voice to all sectors of Mauritian society to co-create a more resilient, equitable, and future-oriented growth model. Mauritius belongs to all of us; imagining its future is therefore everyone's responsibility," stated Dr. Jyoti Jeetun, Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning.

The government will play its full role as an "enabler," by creating the necessary conditions for the emergence of new sectors and innovation, notably through maintaining a competitive and dynamic economy, revamping our industrial policy, and improving the investment environment and supporting infrastructure.

Businesses—small, medium, and large—driving economic transformation, will be called upon to play a key role in creating value, competitiveness, and employment. Alongside civil society, the government and all other stakeholders will lay the foundations for a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable Mauritius by 2050.

Moreover, Vision 2050 will place humans at the center of development, ensuring that every citizen—regardless of their background, abilities, or situation—can access the same opportunities and participate fully in economic and social life. Indeed, by strengthening our cohesion, solidarity, and sense of community, we will build a fairer, more inclusive society that is truly future-oriented.
