Modernization of SSR Airport: Focus on Integrated Border Management and e-Passport

The recent long queues at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport during the weekend, with travelers arriving from destinations such as Perth, Paris, London, Reunion, and Mumbai, highlight the tension between tourism ambitions and operational capacities.

In this context, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam submitted a written response to the National Assembly last week regarding the management of passenger arrivals and departures at Plaisance Airport. The question posed by MP Ludovic Caserne addressed both the measures planned to reduce long wait times and the progress of two significant projects: a new border management system and the introduction of biometric passports.

In his response, the Prime Minister acknowledged that "numerous representations have been made over the years by passengers and economic operators," particularly concerning queues at check-in and immigration counters. He announced that the government is preparing to introduce a new electronic border management system, coupled with biometric passports, "to enhance immigration services."

Electronic System

This future integrated border management system is set to rely on a smart digital platform. It will include a passenger pre-information system, biometric identification, real-time border surveillance, automated self-service gates, risk profiling mechanisms, and an eVisa system. The stated objectives are twofold: to improve traveler experience and to strengthen Mauritius's position as a reliable and efficient travel hub in the region.

The biometric passport, also known as the electronic passport, will incorporate biometric data stored in a chip to facilitate the identification of its holder. The Prime Minister specified that the technical specifications for the border management system and the biometric passport are being developed jointly, with both projects needing to interact closely.

"The new system will provide a fully integrated, digital, and AI-driven platform for an enhanced traveler experience and will help position Mauritius as a reliable and efficient travel hub in the region," he added.

Regarding the biometric passport or e-Passport, it will integrate biometric data stored in a chip for easier recognition of the holder.

While awaiting these long-term advancements, Airports of Mauritius Co. Ltd is implementing short-term measures to prepare for the peak season. These include optimizing the allocation of check-in counters for airlines, dedicated lanes for priority passengers (business class, first class, and those with special needs), coordination with airport police to manage crowds at entry points, and deploying additional staff for checks. Improved coordination with handling teams to reduce baggage delays and enhancements to carousels to expedite baggage delivery upon arrival are also planned.

"As I have stated in various forums, to be a top-tier destination, we need a top-tier airport. That is why my government is proposing projects that will modernize the entire airport system and infrastructure by leveraging new technologies to enhance the passenger experience," the Prime Minister emphasized.
