Azad Gaffar Killed in a Tragic Incident - A Nephew: 'He Was the One Who Made Us Laugh at Family Gatherings'
Azad Gaffar, a devoted family man, was tragically killed in a car accident. Approaching his 61st birthday in January, this resident of Cité-La-Chaux was not ready to retire from his job as a mason. On December 9, while walking beside his bicycle, he was struck by a car. Severely injured, he spent seven days in the intensive care unit before passing away.
"He loved to work," said his nephew. "Even when he was supposed to retire, he continued to work as a mason," he added. Azad was well-known in his community for his skills and cheerful demeanor. "He was very active and never thought about retirement. He kept working; if he wasn’t working, he was busy cleaning his yard. He also loved going to the beach whenever he could," his relative shared.
Family played a significant role in his life. "He was a father to three daughters, each with their own families. His family meant everything to him," he explained. The nephew fondly remembers family gatherings, always lively, thanks to his uncle Azad. "He was always the one who stood out and made everyone laugh. He was very endearing," he continued. No one expected such a tragic end for the sixty-year-old.
He often rode his bicycle when he went out. On the day of the accident, his nephew mentioned that he had seen him. "He was leaving on his bicycle to go to work in nearby areas. I saw him for a moment," he recalled. However, shortly after, he received news of his uncle's serious road accident. "I learned that he was walking on the sidewalk, pushing his bicycle when he was violently struck by a car," his nephew explained.
His relatives rushed to the scene after the accident. The victim had multiple injuries. Initially, he was taken to Mahébourg Hospital and later transferred to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle. He never regained consciousness. Severely injured all over his body, the father passed away on Tuesday, December 16, leaving his family in deep grief and sorrow. The 70-year-old driver who hit him has been charged in Mahébourg court with involuntary manslaughter.
