20 Years of ReA: Subron Discusses the Key Factor That Will Determine the Movement's Future Within the GM
"Rezistans ek Alternativ (ReA) was not born in a salon. It emerged from struggle, in the streets, in 'kraz baraz Pomponette', in the movement to protect the sea, in the fight of workers in Mauritius." This was stated by Ashok Subron during his speech at the 20th anniversary celebration of ReA, held Saturday night at the Petit Camp Tennis Club in Phoenix.
While asserting that nobody would have imagined two decades ago that ReA would be in power today, he emphasized that the three elected representatives of the movement—himself, Kugan Parapen, and Babita Thannoo—are not "careerists or power-seekers" but are modestly contributing to "great changes".
"The government has decided to reform the electoral system. There will not only be the introduction of proportional representation but also the elimination of communal classification, allowing any local candidate who wishes to run to participate in the general elections," assured Ashok Subron.
"ReA was born in the working class. We have experienced strikes. We have fought many battles. Don't think you will find me sitting in Parliament behind Ramgoolam or any other figure who motivated me. Every step you took, I learned that as a trade unionist. I was engaged in negotiations, in strikes, and today, my comrades Babita, Kugan, and all our friends, we fight with the same conviction, with the same vision. And this vision will determine how long we will continue in government or how long we will not continue," stated Ashok Subron.
