PRB 2026 - Reaz Chuttoo: "Workers have only received Rs 300 on the minimum wage"

The 2026 Pay Research Bureau (PRB) report continues to provoke anger among trade unions. According to Reaz Chuttoo, negotiator for the Confederation of Workers in the Private and Public Sectors (CTSP), the conclusion is clear. "This report clearly favors high-ranking officials. Workers have technically only received around Rs 300 on their minimum wage, based on our calculations. And this comes after several years of waiting."

Using data from Statistics Mauritius, Reaz Chuttoo highlights a major inconsistency between the PRB figures and the cost of living. "A family of four, comprising two adults and two children, needs Rs 45,030 to live decently, based on an approximate ratio of 1.4. Divided by two, the minimum income per adult should be Rs 22,515. However, the government sets this income at Rs 17,975, including wage compensation, effective from January 1," he laments.

The unionist acknowledges one positive point: overtime for General Workers will now be calculated based on Rs 17,975, rather than the unchanged base salary of Rs 10,250 despite successive compensations. The CTSP announces that it will continue to analyze the PRB 2026 report and will publish the identified anomalies.
