Medine Records a Record Production of Red Onions in Cascavelle

Medine has announced an exceptional agricultural achievement with a record production of red onions harvested from one of its fields in Cascavelle in December 2025. Cultivated over an area of 3.2 hectares, the plot produced 246 tons, resulting in a yield of 77 tons per hectare, significantly higher than the national average.

This result is attributed to the adoption of a new high-yield variety of red onion, combined with rigorous soil preparation, optimized irrigation management, and effective weed control. The harvest took place under favorable conditions, marked by limited rainfall, without the benefit of an exceptional climatic context.

According to Edgar Joseph Pierre Desjardins, Head of Agrinnovation at Medine, this performance is the result of "methodical work" and "precise cultural management" at every stage of the production cycle. Other plots have also recorded good results with the same variety: 46 tons per hectare on 1.8 hectares in Bois Pipes and 64 tons per hectare on 5 hectares in La Vanille. While a good yield generally ranges between 40 and 60 tons per hectare, Medine's overall average this year reached 33 tons per hectare, compared to the usual 25.

For Patrick Lagesse, Managing Director of the Agriculture division, these results confirm the impact of innovation and sustainable practices on productivity and food security in Mauritius. "These results reflect Medine's agricultural vision: investing in innovation, continuously improving our practices, and sustainably enhancing productivity. This performance directly contributes to the country's food security and demonstrates that better-managed agriculture can produce more responsibly," he states.
