Christmas: Mauritians Spend More for Fewer Gifts

In Mauritius, giving gifts at Christmas remains a cherished tradition, but behaviors are changing: fewer presents are being purchased, yet each gift is receiving a larger investment. Women tend to set budgets around Rs 5,000, while men focus on the Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 range.

The tradition of giving a gift or money at Christmas remains deeply rooted in Mauritius. However, Retail Scan Services notes some changes this year. "Material gifts still dominate, but their popularity is clearly declining: in 2024, more than 8 out of 10 Mauritians reported buying gifts, while in 2025, that number has dropped to just over 7 out of 10. This marks a shift in attitude: Mauritians are moving from a very generous Christmas in 2024 to a more sensible Christmas in 2025. They remain attached to traditions but are mindful of current economic realities," states the economic monitoring company.

Retail Scan Services also highlights an increase in the number of people not planning to buy gifts. "This decline seems more dictated by budget constraints than by a cultural break," the company analyzes. Another rising trend is cash gifts, perceived as a more flexible and useful option.
