Saint-Jean Cemetery: Government Releases Funds for Rehabilitation

On Monday, December 22, 2025, Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam officially presented a check to Monsignor Jean Michaël Durhône to finance the rehabilitation of the Saint-Jean Cemetery, which suffered significant damage during the floods from November 2023 to January 2024. The amount of the funding has not been disclosed.

The ceremony was attended by elected officials from constituency no. 18, several ministers, local authority representatives, and members of the Church.

The Prime Minister described the situation as a "scandal," reminding attendees that the damages were linked to the previous government's failure to adhere to recommendations made by Singaporean consultants.

He emphasized that it was a moral duty to support the affected families.

According to technical assessments, 512 graves were damaged, with 71 suffering severe damage. The rehabilitation work, estimated to cost over ten million rupees, will also include strengthening the cemetery's perimeter walls and is expected to take six to eight months to complete.
