Science and Agriculture: Ameenah Gurib-Fakim Appointed Chairperson of the World Agriculture Forum
Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the former President of the Republic and a trained scientist, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the World Agriculture Forum (WAF) on Monday.
This international organization dedicated to sustainable agricultural development is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and brings together governments, farmers, agricultural businesses, experts, and development institutions. Its goal is to promote the sustainable development of agriculture through political advocacy, trade facilitation, and technological solutions.
The WAF positions itself as a neutral, independent, and non-profit organization, focusing on improving the living conditions of smallholder farmers. Among its primary missions, the Forum facilitates the dissemination of innovations, technologies, and successful agricultural models that often fail to reach beneficiaries due to geographical, political, or economic barriers. It also produces and shares market studies, research reports, and position papers to support decision-making among sector stakeholders.
The WAF hosts the annual World Agriculture Summit as its flagship event, along with various regional agricultural summits and fairs. These gatherings allow global leaders to discuss the challenges of sustainable agriculture and food systems, while promoting public-private partnerships and showcasing the latest innovations in the sector. The Forum also awards the World Agriculture Prize, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to global agriculture.
Other activities of the WAF include organizing trade fairs, promoting investments, facilitating technological exchanges, and fostering international cooperation. The Forum sets standards, rankings, and provides policy advice to guide global agriculture towards sustainable growth, while considering climate risks and rapid technological advancements.
