Grande Pointe-aux-Piments - Death of an Octogenarian: Son Suggests Possible Assault
In Grande Pointe-aux-Piments, an 87-year-old man passed away on Sunday at the SSRN Hospital in Pamplemousses, after being admitted on December 7. His son has suggested that there may have been an assault, while the Trou-aux-Biches police are conducting an investigation.
The investigation follows the death of the octogenarian, who died at the SSRN Hospital on December 21. He had been admitted on December 7 but was unable to explain the circumstances surrounding his condition. His son suspects foul play. An autopsy performed on Monday revealed an infection (sepsis).
The police in Trou-aux-Biches are trying to uncover the truth behind this case. On December 7, the man was taken to SSRN Hospital. When police visited him to take his complaint, he was too ill to communicate with them.
He remained under medical observation for several days, but his condition worsened. On December 21, around 3:30 PM, a doctor confirmed his death. During the investigation, police gathered statements from the deceased's relatives. According to his wife, he had a history of excessive alcohol consumption and frequently got into altercations with neighbors, sometimes resulting in bruises from falls.
Additionally, it has been revealed that the family situation had been tense for years. The victim was involved in recurring conflicts and had previously obtained a protective order against his son. The son was questioned by police on Sunday, explaining their difficult relationship: "My father was an alcoholic and would take it out on my mother and me. I had many issues with him. He filed numerous complaints against me. In 2018, he got a protection order against me. I even went to jail because of it," he told the police.
Due to his father's behavior, he stated that he had not lived at home since mid-November and had moved elsewhere. Recently, his mother, suffering from hypertension and diabetes, was admitted to SSRN Hospital. She noted that her husband did not visit her during her hospital stay. On December 17, she was discharged and learned that her husband was also admitted for an alleged assault. "I don’t know how he got injured," she told the police.
When his mother was hospitalized, the son visited her and then went home to collect his clothes, but did not see his father that day. On December 7, a relative contacted him to say his father was walking around town shirtless and intoxicated. It was only later that family members learned he had been taken to SSRN Hospital. The son went to the police for more details, and two days later he visited his father at the hospital. "My father claimed he was assaulted but couldn’t identify his attacker," he reported.
At this stage of the investigation, police are continuing their inquiries to determine the exact circumstances of this incident.
