Christmas Decoration: From Pines to Glamorous Trends

Christmas Decoration: From natural and fragrant to artificial and sparkling or artisanal and sustainable, the Christmas tree is the undisputed icon of the festive season. Available in a variety of styles—from rustic charm to glamorous shine—it seamlessly fits into the atmosphere of your home. Let’s explore the options available on the market to create an enchanting decor.

Natural Trees

For those who value the charm and fragrance of a real tree, the forestry service of the Ministry of Agro-Industry maintains the tradition. The sale of Christmas pines began on Saturday, December 20, and will continue until December 24, offering families the opportunity to purchase freshly cut trees.

The flagship species is the Pinus elliottii, recognizable by its long needles.

"Pinus elliottii is one of the best-known and loved species in Mauritius. Its affordable price and ease of propagation make it accessible to many families. Mauritians particularly appreciate it for its fresh scent that fills homes during the holidays," explains Zayd Jhumka, Acting Deputy Conservator of Forests.

This year, the forestry service is selling about 2,000 trees. Zayd Jhumka emphasizes the sustainable approach: "It’s important to know that these trees have been specifically planted to be sold for Christmas. Every time we cut one down, we plant another in its place."

The trees, approximately 2 meters tall, are offered at a fixed price of Rs 200 each, a price maintained for accessibility. "We kept the same price as last year so that every family can enjoy the Christmas spirit at home," concludes Zayd Jhumka.

Additionally, buyers can benefit from a personalized cutting service on-site to adjust the tree to the desired height.
