"We Have Lost Everything": The Pain of the Bégué Family at the Start of the Year

New Year's Day has not been a celebration for everyone. On Florida Lane, Baie-du-Tombeau, the Bégué family is facing a distressing start to the year. The house they were renting was devastated by a fire on Thursday, January 1st, around 2 PM.

The fire reportedly started on the upper floor. Despite the firefighters' quick response, two bedrooms were completely destroyed.

"We have lost everything... the furniture, the clothes... even the school supplies for my two children, aged 14 and 8... school starts next week," shares Michelette Bégué, visibly shaken, who works in a factory. She and her husband, a mason, have had to find temporary refuge at a sister-in-law's place in Baie-du-Tombeau, while their children are being cared for by a relative in Vacoas.

According to Michelette, a fan might have caused the fire. She is now appealing for help to find housing in the area. She states that she has been trying for over 13 years to obtain a house from the NHDC, but to no avail so far.
