First Days of 2026: No Looking Back

The first day of the year was marred by several tragedies. The police reported six separate incidents involving both Mauritians and foreign nationals, resulting in five fatalities. On that day, the police conducted 5,295 traffic checks (including 776 on motorcycles), with 18 breathalyzer tests and one drug test returning positive results. They also recorded 107 speed violations as part of their road safety and accident prevention efforts.
