Dan Caulachand Loses His Leg in an Accident - His Father: "He’s Holding On"
In the small family home of Poudre-d’Or, Kresoon Caulachand struggles to hold back his tears. His son Dan, a 36-year-old mason and father, is fighting for his life in the hospital after a terrible motorcycle accident that occurred early in the morning on December 29. The accident has cost him his left leg.
"When the first aid team arrived, they had to bandage his big leg," the father confides, his voice breaking with emotion. This tragedy strikes the Caulachand family while many others are still celebrating the holiday season.
On the night of December 29, around 2 a.m., Dan was riding his motorcycle from Goodlands to Poudre-d’Or when he suddenly lost control of his vehicle on the village’s main road. The motorcycle skidded on the asphalt with a screeching sound. Surveillance cameras captured the scene: sparks flew from the motorcycle before the rider was violently thrown to the ground.
The impact was devastating. Dan landed against the safety barrier along the road. "When he fell, his leg got trapped against the barrier," Kresoon explains. His son’s left leg was severed on the spot, crushed by the metal barrier. "His leg was destroyed, it got ripped off and ended up some distance away," he recounts, still in shock.
A Daily Battle
Rushed to the hospital, Dan underwent a delicate surgical procedure. In addition to the amputation, he suffers from severe pelvic injuries. The family is now waiting for the doctors' conclusions to understand the next steps in his treatment.
"He talks and understands what happened, he lost a leg, which is hard," Kresoon shares. Despite the harsh reality, Dan seems to be holding on. "He appears strong in his mind, he's keeping up," his father testifies with a hint of admiration. Every day, family members take turns at his bedside to offer their support during this ordeal.
From Australia, his two sisters regularly check on his condition. "They were shocked when we told them what happened to Dan," Kresoon recalls.
Dan embodied determination. After working as a minibus driver, he had to change paths when repairs for his vehicle became too expensive. "When there was no work as a minibus driver, he would do masonry and other small jobs. Since he was young, he’s been resourceful," his father proudly recounts. Dan juggled various handyman jobs, including masonry, to provide for his wife and their 6-year-old child.
This little boy constantly asks for his father. At just 6 years old, he doesn’t fully understand what has happened. Family members have struggled to find the right words to explain Dan's experience that night, which changed everything.
In their home in Poudre-d’Or, the Caulachands now face a difficult reality. But hope remains. Dan, a fighter who has never given up, is already showing signs of strength in the face of adversity. His family stands united in this trial, ready to accompany him on this long path to recovery that is beginning.
