Fatal Accident in Bel Ombre: 57-Year-Old Woman Dies in Hospital Hours Later
A tragic end for Koressiah Bai Mauthoor, a 57-year-old resident of Pailles. She was involved in a road accident that occurred yesterday, January 4, 2026, in the early evening at Bel Ombre.
Two cars collided at the entrance of the Tamassa hotel in Bel Ombre around 6 PM yesterday. One of the vehicles, a Kia, which was carrying the family of the victim (four occupants including a child), was severely damaged. The other car, a Suzuki, was driven by a Mauritian residing in Canada who was on vacation in Mauritius and also sustained damages.
Koressiah Bai Mauthoor was initially taken to the Souillac hospital for first aid, then to the Rose-Belle hospital before being transferred to the Neuro ICU at Jeetoo hospital in Port-Louis. She passed away in the early hours of Monday, January 5, 2026. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on the victim's body this morning.
The other occupants of the Kia sustained minor injuries and received treatment at a private clinic.
Additionally, both drivers underwent a breathalyzer test which returned negative results. The driver of the Suzuki was arrested and spent the night in police custody. He is expected to appear in the Grand Port district court this Monday.
