An earthquake shook Rodrigues Island at 14:09 on Tuesday, January 6th, catching residents off guard. Fortunately, it resulted in no casualties or damage. The quake, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, was recorded approximately 77 kilometers northeast of Rodrigues at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Speaking live on Radio Plus this afternoon, Prithiviraj Booneeady stated that this is the closest earthquake ever recorded near Rodrigues. "At 77 km from Rodrigues, it's the first time we've recorded such proximity. That's why the tremor was felt in several locations," said the acting director of the Vacoas meteorological station in response to questions from our journalist, Élodie Domun.
