After the Earthquake in Rodrigues: Vassen Kauppaymuthoo: "We Need Buildings Suitable for Cyclones and Earthquakes"
According to oceanographer and environmental engineer Vassen Kauppaymuthoo, the seismic risk in Rodrigues has been largely overlooked despite several earthquakes occurring over the past decade. Construction practices on the island have traditionally favored cyclone resistance over earthquake resilience. This has resulted in a prevalence of concrete buildings designed to withstand cyclones but poorly suited for seismic activity. "We need buildings that can withstand both cyclones and earthquakes to ensure safety and resilience in our infrastructure," he emphasized.
