The WHO Regional Director Commits to Supporting Mauritius in Achieving Vision 2050
The Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Africa, Dr. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, visited Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis. During this meeting, he reiterated WHO's commitment to supporting Vision 2050 for a healthier and more prosperous nation.
Health and Wellness Minister Anil Bachoo and the WHO's Resident Representative in Mauritius, Dr. Abdou Salam Gueye, were also present. It is worth noting that the WHO team is on an official visit to Mauritius from January 19 to 23, 2026.
Dr. Mohamed Yakub Janabi commended the government for its ongoing efforts to strengthen the healthcare system and improve the quality of life for citizens through equitable access to health services. He emphasized the shared vision of establishing a healthier and more resilient healthcare system and reaffirmed WHO's commitment to supporting Mauritius in the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.
Furthermore, the WHO Regional Director highlighted that Mauritius, along with seven other small island states, recently secured a bulk purchasing contract for essential medicines, which has contributed to reducing high procurement costs. He praised Mauritius for its low maternal mortality rate and its vigorous anti-smoking measures aimed at reducing consumption.
He also urged the community to engage in regular physical activities, such as walking and cycling, and to adopt healthier and more balanced eating habits. He underscored the importance of investing in a healthier and more active youth by encouraging preventive measures to help young people avoid early pregnancies and abstain from drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.
