Macron Promises a Quick Ban on Social Media for Those Under 15 in France
French President Emmanuel Macron has announced his intention to expedite the legislative process to ban the use of social media for children under 15, aiming for the law to be in effect before the school year starts in September.
In a video broadcast by BFMTV, Macron stated: "The brains of our children and teenagers are not for sale. Their emotions should not be manipulated, whether by American platforms or Chinese algorithms."
He also emphasized his plan to ban mobile phones in high schools, asserting: "This is a clear rule — clear for teenagers, clear for families, clear for teachers."
This initiative continues the trend set by several Western countries to protect youth from the harmful effects of social media, similar to Australia’s landmark law from last December, which prohibits those under 16 from creating accounts on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and other platforms.
