The utilization of non-human primates (NHPs) is vital for foundational scientific research and understanding how to prevent and treat emerging infectious diseases, leading to the successful development of every COVID-19 vaccine, as well as advancements in cancer and diabetes treatment, along with a multitude of rare diseases. Before a drug can be tested in human clinics, the FDA typically requires trials in two animal species, including one non-rodent species, to ensure patient safety. Due to their close genetic, physiological, and behavioral similarities to humans, NHPs are often the only relevant animal models for critical translational research.
