Suren Dayal Appointed General Manager of the STC

Suren Dayal officially assumed his role as General Manager of the State Trading Corporation (STC) on Monday. The STC is a public body responsible for the importation and distribution of essential products in Mauritius, including petroleum products, flour, and rice. His appointment was recently approved by government authorities as part of the key appointments within public institutions.

Suren Dayal replaces Rajiv Servansingh, who resigned from his position at the end of 2024 following the general elections. A well-known figure in the Mauritian political landscape, he has previously served as a minister and a Labour Party MP, a party he joined in 1976.

He notably challenged the election of Pravind Jugnauth in 2019 in constituency No. 8 as an unsuccessful candidate, taking his case to court, including the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, in an electoral petition aimed at annulment of the former Prime Minister's election, but to no avail. In March, he was awarded the title of Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GOSK) for his contributions to education, politics, and social issues.
