Increase in Fatal Accidents: Osman Mahomed Calls for Emergency Meeting

In light of the alarming rise in fatal accidents, Minister Osman Mahomed is taking decisive action. An emergency meeting, new deterrent measures, enhanced controls, and the imminent launch of the Penalty Points System are all part of the authorities' strategy to curb the road carnage and emphasize that safety is non-negotiable.

In response to the surge in fatal accidents recorded in recent days, the Minister of Land Transport, Osman Mahomed, convened an emergency meeting on Tuesday, January 27, with key stakeholders in road safety. The President of the National Road Safety Council, Zeeshan Rajani, along with other sector stakeholders, attended this meeting.

The minister explained that this meeting was a response to the urgent situation, as reckless driving continues to cost lives despite recently introduced legislative reforms. He reminded attendees that since the enactment of the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2025 on December 12, a decrease in accidents has been observed, although he emphasized that this trend remains fragile given recent tragedies.

Osman Mahomed expressed confidence in the impact of the Penalty Points System (PPS), which is set to launch on Friday, January 30, 2026, with effective enforcement starting at midnight on Saturday, January 31. According to him, this system will serve as a genuine deterrent against dangerous behavior. "The message is clear: violations of the traffic code will no longer be tolerated," he stated.

He also announced that offenses and penalty points will be recorded through KOREK!, a dedicated mobile application whose launch is imminent. This app will help the public better understand how the PPS works and how it will be applied.

Regarding drivers deemed unfit to take the road, the minister warned that strict measures will be implemented. He added that his ministry is collaborating with relevant institutions to strengthen control and accountability mechanisms.

The issue of off-road vehicles still circulating was also addressed. Osman Mahomed indicated that actions are being taken in collaboration with the Solid Waste Management Division. He also ordered regular inspections of road infrastructure, particularly to ensure the prompt repair of potholes. Finally, he urged the police to maintain rigorous and consistent enforcement of traffic laws, reaffirming that road safety remains an absolute national priority.
