Internet Dangers: Avinash Ramtohul Discusses Examples from Other Countries

It is crucial to draw inspiration from the measures adopted by other countries to address the dangers that young people face online. This was the stance expressed by Avinash Ramtohul, the Minister of Technology, Communication, and Innovation.

He spoke to the press following the launch of the National Data Strategy this afternoon in Ébène. The minister commented on the recent ban on social media for those under 16 years old implemented in Australia. He notably discussed the technical challenges encountered in enforcing this measure.

However, Avinash Ramtohul urged Mauritian parents to remain vigilant regarding their children's use of social media.

In Australia, those under 16 have been officially barred from accessing several social media platforms since December, marking a world-first applauded by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. In France, lawmakers have approved in the first reading a law prohibiting social media for those under 15, a measure supported by the government and President Emmanuel Macron. Additionally, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has personally advocated for such restrictions on minors.
