Internet Dangers: Avinash Ramtohul Discusses Examples from Other Countries
It is crucial to draw inspiration from the measures adopted by other countries in response to the dangers faced by young people on the Internet. This was the opinion expressed by Avinash Ramtohul, Minister of Technology, Communication, and Innovation.
He spoke to the press following the launch of the National Data Strategy this afternoon in Ébène. The minister commented on the recent ban on social media for those under 16 years of age, implemented in Australia. He highlighted the technical difficulties faced in enforcing this measure.
Avinash Ramtohul also urged Mauritian parents to be vigilant regarding their children's use of social media.
In Australia, those under 16 have been officially banned from accessing several social media platforms since December, marking a world first praised by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. In France, lawmakers have approved in the first reading a law prohibiting social media access for those under 15, a measure supported by the government and President Emmanuel Macron. Additionally, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has personally endorsed such restrictions for minors.
